6 Tips to Help Your Pet Lose Weight
According to the latest veterinary surveys, over half our nation’s dogs and cats are overweight. This means almost 80 million pets are at risk for developing crippling arthritis, debilitating diabetes, catastrophic kidney and heart disease, high blood pressure and many forms of cancer. How can you slim down your super-sized pet?

1. Calories Control
How many calories does my dog need? If you don’t know how many calories your pet needs each day, you don’t know how much to feed. And don’t think you can trust the bag; feeding guides are formulated for adult, un-spayed or un-neutered active dogs and cats. That means if you have an older, spayed or neutered indoor lap potato you’re probably feeding 20% to 30% too much if you follow the food’s instructions. Instead, ask your veterinarian to calculate the proper number of calories your pet needs each day. Another good starting point is to use this formula: Divide your pet’s weight by 2.2. Multiply this figure times 30. Add 70 and you’ve got a general idea of how many calories give up your pet. [(pet’s weight in lbs/2.2) x 30] +70.
2. Measure Meals
A greatest tool in the fight against excess weight is a measuring cup. It’s not the greatest idea to leave food out all day in your dog’s dish. Split its daily meal into two or three meals a day measuring cup. If your pet doesn’t finish the meal within 30 minutes, pick it up. This doesn’t always work for cats, who are grazers by nature.
Measure their daily meal in a cup and refill the dish throughout the day, making sure to only take the food from the cup and not from the bag!
3. Diet Food

That make meal time more of a game and chore to mentally stimulate them. This helps pets realize they are full and stops them from scarfing down their dinners. Treat balls have the added benefit of making your pet. chase a ball around while they eat. It’s an exercise and meal in one!
6. Replace Those Treats
Treating is the most common reason for pet obesity. But even as a veterinary technician, it is hard to tell an owner to stop treating their pet. It is how we show them love! So consider replacing treats with something healthy like a carrot. instead of that Milk-Bone. Or if you insist on giving treats, make sure you cut back on their daily kibble to make up for it. If your dog is in training and needs lots of treats. try using his daily kibble in low stimulus environments. And mixing it up with a special treat here. And there— they will never know what to expect!
